The P.S. 226/Nadia J. Pagan Gymnasium Fund, Inc. is an organization that was established by the faculty and friends of P.S. 226 to raise money to build a school gymnasium for its students.
P.S. 226 does not currently have a gymnasium and seeks to create facilities to support a more diverse and effective physical education program for its students. The gymnasium will enhance life for P.S. 226 students, staff, and its surrounding community, as it will provide opportunities for organized team sports, theatre, dance, and other culture enhancing activities for all ages. In a neighborhood where children are forbidden to play outside or at a classmate’s house for fear of their safety, it is imperative the children be granted a safe, healthy outlet. We all understand the mental and physical health risks associated with lack of exercise. It is here, at the elementary level, where a child’s personality, self-esteem and motivation are developed, setting the stage for the rest of their academic career. P.S. 226 is committed to empowering every student to achieve his or her full potential and become a lifelong learner and a responsible, productive, and caring citizen.
Presently, these disadvantaged students endure physical education in the school cafeteria, which is limited, at best, due to space and time constrictions. A quality school physical education class is said to be ideal for improving children’s fundamental motor skills and enhancing overall health. National health recommendations call for pre-adolescent children to have daily physical education classes that engage children in moderate to vigorous physical activity at least fifty percent of P.E. class time. Many schools fall short of the mark; P.S. 226 does not want to be one of those schools.
Medical studies have long suggested that aerobic exercise boosts cellular and molecular components of the brain and improves problem solving and other cognitive abilities. In other words, children who participate in daily physical education will learn more effectively in the classroom.
